After almost two decades of waiting for new Soundgarden music, their fans will get a heavy helping of both the new and the old.

The infamous ’90s-era grunge band recent gave away a free download of their Avengers soundtrack tune and first song in 16 years, “Live To Rise,” on iTunes for a week and now Soundgarden has announced that they are releasing a classic album box set called Soundgarden: Classic Album Selection in May.

Included in the box set are original recordings like 1989’s “Louder Than Love,” 1991’s “Badmotorfinger,” and 1994’s “Superunknown” and 1996-s “Down on the Upside.” The albums will also include artwork from a long-time Soundgarden collaborator, Josh Graham.

As for a new original Soundgarden album, Chris Cornell said in an interview that the band is in the mixing stage.

“We’ve been working on a new album for a while and it’s taken a while because we’ve ended up touring a few times in the middle of writing it and recording it,” said Cornell. “We’re pretty much done with that.”

“We’re at the mixing stage of it and then this idea came up that we’d contribute a song for the Avengers film and so it’s actually the newest song that we have,” Cornell continued. “Let’s take a song we’ve been working on for the album… but none of them were really right, which happens sometimes, so we thought, let’s do another one. That’s the beauty of it.”

The Avengers Assemble soundtrack is slated to come out on May 1st.

The North American release date for Soundgarden – Classic Album Selection has not been announced.
