In honor of World Refugee Day and all the displaced people escaping violent situations in their homelands, Bush have released a new video called “People at War.” It marks the band’s first new music in two years.

“People at War” is a slow, dramatic song that highlights the plight refugees face. The song’s subdued melody and beat puts the focus on the lyrics. “We hurt together/ We hurt apart,” Gavin Rossdale sings on the chorus.

Rossdale told People, “We made this video to raise awareness about the terrible plight of refugees across the world, who are forced to flee their homes for fear of violence, persecution and death. Please stand with us and sign the petition to ask governments to work together to help. Thank you.”

On the UN Refugee Agency’s website, Rossdale explained what inspired the song. “Having seen the footage of innocent refugees forced to flee their homes and lives, culminating in the picture of the young boy, Aylan Kurdi, lying dead on the shore–the horror of that photograph, as a father, as a human being–was too powerful to avoid,” he stated.

The video is a dark exploration of what refugees face. Bullets rip them apart in slow motion toward the video’s end and recall the violence they handle on a daily basis. Not for the faint of heart.
