"I'd been an obsessive bad brains fan since I was a 14 year old kid." - Moby

By Staff

Like many other musicians and artists, Shepard Fairey is a Bad Brains fanatic. The Los Angeles based artist opened an art exhibitionist yesterday (July 23) to show his love of the Washington D.C. punk band titled Banned In Babylon: The Art and Culture of Bad Brains.

The exhibition features works on paper and paintings on canvas by Darryl Jenifer; photographs by Lucian Perkins, John Mousheghian, and Jeannie “Aunt Jean” Pawlowski; mixed-media paintings and prints by Shepard Fairey; and an assortment of memorabilia including rare vintage flyers, posters, and records.

To celebrate, fellow Bad Brains fans not only showed up but took the stage to perform a full Bad Brains for the opening reception. Moby and Dave Grohl joined Bad Brains original member Darryl Jenifer, one-time Brad Brains drummer and current McRad member, Chuck Treece as well as Scream’s Pete Stahl.

Moby shared his excitement by posting his admiration for the band as well as last night’s setlist.

Last night I got to play guitar on a full set of #badbrains songs with #darryljennifer #davegrohl #petestahl #chucktreece . It was amazing, and a dream come true as I’d been an obsessive bad brains fan since I was a 14 year old kid seeing them at cbgbs and Irving plaza. What a night. Thank you. Oh, set list:
Sailin’ on
Don’t need it
Right brigade
House of suffering
Banned in Dc
How low can a punk get?
Big takeover
Pay to cum
Purple haze

The Bad Brains exhibition runs July 23– August 20 and is located at Subliminal Projects, 1331 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, 90026. For those unable to attend the art show in Los Angeles, Fairey’s clothing brand, Obey Giant, can purchase Bad Brains inspired apparel via the brand’s website.
